(2) Day 23 [19MAR16/SAT] San Antonio/the Alamo... photos by Sharon w/Cannon... |
... coming into San Antoane... |
... we are on top of the Alamo... just need to find a place to park... |
... about 180 years ago Santa Anna ordered his army on a 700 mile forced march, the longest forced march in history, to stop the
Texas rebellion; Texans stalled the advance of Santa Anna's army in order to have time for Sam Houston to amass an army of
sufficient size; the Mexicans were first stalled at Gonzales, then Goliad, then the Alamo where William Travis, Daniel Boone and
Davy Crockett were killed in the masacre there; about 300 Texans at the Alamo stalled the Mexican army of 6000
soldiers for 13 days; by the time the Mexican army arrived at San Jacinto there were sufficent Texans there to defeat them in an
early morning surprise attack... |
... there were two types of long arms used in the battle of the Alamo, muskets and rifles; muskets were accurate and had sufficent
muzzle velosity to inflict fatal wounds at 100 yards (further and the musket ball would just hit and bounce off); rifles were accurate
and had sufficent muzzle velosity to inflict fatal wounds at 200 yards (further and the rifle bullet would just hit and bounce off);
a musket could be reloaded in 20 seconds, a rifle took about a minute to reload; you have about a minute (3 shots from your musket) from the time an advancing
army comes within range until you must affix bayonet... |
