Lets think about this a moment... September 5, 1950 I would be 5 years old, but by Texas law since my birthday was after the fall term started I would be a
mid-termer and start school in the Spring 1951 semester, so, 1st half of kindergarten in the Spring of 1951; then, dad was recalled by the Army to teach new
artillery officers at Fort Sill in Lawton Oklahoms, and, since Oklahoma had no such sillyness with mid-termers, I was put right into 1st grade in the fall of 1951 - before
I turned 6 years old, thus skipping a half a grade, viz., high-kindergarten; then next year we moved back to Houston in the summer of 1952 and dad resumed his job at Westinghouse and I was
put directly into 3rd grade in the fall of 1952 - oops, and may have skipped a whole grade except a couple of weeks into 3rd grade there was a math test and we were to write down ALL the
numbers from 1 to 200... well that's just way too tedius, maybe nobody would notice I didn't write them all if I just fudged it going up to 120 thus: "... 117, 118, 119, 200;"
well, it WAS noticed and I was put back into 2nd grade, but, I was no longer a mid-termer and I ended up graduating highschool and starting college in the fall of 1963
at 17 years old, but, although I was in college, I really had no idea what I wanted to do... and therefore... when RL III was born on September 20th and we had the
option to let him start school before his birthday or make him wait a year, the decision was made to wait and perhaps he will be at some advantage being a little more
mature than his classmates, and, perhaps he would have a better idea what he wanted to do when he did graduate high school... well... that was the plan, nice idea, but
it did not really seem to make any more difference in his outcome.

Below: August 1957 RL Holder family's Colorado vacation... we went every other year during this time staying at Grand Lake, Colorado's largest and deepest natural lake located in the
headwaters of the Colorado River in Grand County, Coloradol Grand Lake feeds Shadow Mountain Lake, which feeds Gramby Resivoir... on the east side of the lake, less than a mile from the
middle of the village, and just up river from Grand Lake is Adam's Falls - really awesome water falls easily accessed by a 0.7 mile loop trail good for all skill levels with several view points;
Grand Lake is 360' deep, mom was concerned about drowning
in the lake and dad dismissed that idea with the fact that a person could drown in 2' of water, land around the lake is federal land leased to individuals on a 100 year lease, houses built
on the leased land are really awesome. Dad towed his boat to Grand Lake in 1961 and we water skied, water is 42o BRRRRR! Dad asked me if I wanted to just get out of the boat in
the middle of the lake or try standing on the dock and jumping off at the moment the accelerating boat got the slack out of the rope - I opted for starting in the water; so, into the water
and get skis on and when dad made the "question mark" around me to deliver the rope handle to me and began to slowly drag me through the water as he took the slack out of the rope - the
difference in the temperature of the water that was heated by the boat's motor was actually noticable - not warm, but not AS cold; Uncle Dick decided this was as good a place as any to
learn to ski, he sounded like a wounded buffalo when he jumped into the water, yell echoed off of the surrounding mountains, he learned in just 3 attempts, the cold water being an incentive
to get the heck OUT of the water! [1200dpi]
