Penny was diagnosed with an enlarged heart in November of 2021 and the doctor said that she likely only had about two weeks left. So, in addition to... - NexGard & Heartguard Plus monthly (which all dogs get anyway) ... Penny at about 2 years old was diagnosed with Addison's Disease and perscribed... - Percorten V, 2.5ml every 30 days - Prednisone, 5mg/day ... to which meds the following heart meds were added... Vetmedin, 10mg tablets, 1 tab in AM, 1/2 tab in PM Furosemide, 50mg tabs, 1/2 tab in AM, 1/2 tab PM Spironolactone, 50mg tabs, 2 tabs in AM, 2 tabs PM Benazepril, 10mg tabs, 1 tab in AM, 1 tab PM ... and since she had lost so much weight (down to 95lbs) she was put on a high calorie diet to keep up with her increased metabolism with her increased breathing rate: large breed puppy kibble and 1/2 can of puppy puppy chow morning and night (which got her weight back up to 115lbs)... ... and yet, we could tell no difference in Penny's actions before and after her heart condition diagnosis - she still ate and drank the same, ran back and forth along the stone wall in the front yard, etc, but still, even so, with the two week warning we were ever conscious of her now more limited time and are greatful for the nine more months she was withus! |

Penny has been diagnosed with an enlarged heart and we've been warned about congestive heart failure which could occur at any time, i.e., "don't walk her any further from a car than you want to carry her back" - so, no more one and two mile walks on the beach with Penny; today Penny and I wait up by the parking lot while Sharon and Lucy go on down to the beach for a walk... |

(water & food was in the bathroom and there was an echo in there) ... (hung out by the door a lot to be sure to get to go if...) ... all ready to go and waiting for Sammie to arrive to babysit... ... TAAA DAAAA!... ... meanwhile the dogs have crashed while Sammie was babysittting... ... Sunday, Penny and Lucy on the ride home... |

07AUG22/SUNDAY: note that we suspect that sometime during Friday night Penny had a stroke because Saturday morning we had to help her stand up in the bedroom by Sharon and Rusl, on each side of her, picking up the rug she was laying on (the laminate wood flooring is slippery for Penny to get good purchase on to get up); and, once she was up her right hind leg was shaking and she could barely put any weight on it. Penny took her morning heart meds and drank some water but did not eat her breakfast (Penny's meals, once she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart (and had lost weight down to 95 pounds) were Ultra large Breed Puppy kibble with 1/2 of a 13-oz can of Purina Pro Plan Development Puppy Chicken & Rice Entree Dog Food because with her increased heart rate and breathing rate she needed a high calorie diet. Penny drank water and pee'd a couple of times during the day, but, no poop; she ate her dinner wlth 2 Predesones and later had her heart meds and Denta Stick. Sunday was a repeat of Saturday [SIGH] Lucy seemed to know something was the matter with Penny and laid next to her a lot; the first two photographs in the sequence below is of the Christmas tree squeeky toy that Lucy placed by Penny. Subsequent photographs are of Rusl laying on the couch by Penny... |

08AUG22/MONDAY: Penny managed toget up on her own this morning, but her right hind leg was still only barely functional [SIGH]. She took her morning meds but only ate a little of the turkey that was put on top of her breakfast, drank some water, pee'd a little, and laid down in the living room. We reluctantly reached the "it's time" decision, called the vet - said bring her on in... 10am: "Lets go see the doggy doctor" - sight of her leash and Penny was up and ready to go, got into the back of the Solora unaided... we drove by the Harbor Beach with the windods down listening to the waves and then we were at the vet office. We sat with Penny and talked to her as she dozed off. [ :( ] |

09AUG22: Penny liked to lay on the front porch behind the bushes and watch for some body or some dog to walk by then run out and bark - not because she was a mean dog, but big as she was she was intimidating and only a few people figired out she was barking because she wanted to meet & greet and get some petting. Typically when she went outside she went straight to the corner of the fence to see if anyone was coming up the steet. The stone wall Penny ran back and forth by trying to get attention. Slober on the front window from zealous barking. Slober on the refer while waiting for pills. A while back Penny barfed on her pink rug, it was too old to run through the warshing machine again so it was thrown out and replaced with rug that used to be in Izzy's "room;" when she was stretched out on Izzy's rug it could be difficult to find a place to put my feet to get out of bed but we could see each other in the mirror: she also liked to lay inbetwen the dresser and the bed with her head by the bottom of the bed - it was difficult to get by her there. The salad fork that was supposed to discourage Penny from resting her head on the table and eyeballing the food on our plates. |
