15JUN08: awakened by the sound of bikes, one after another streaming out of the ranch and bikes around our campsite
firing up and leaving... no rain this year! A light fog which burned off. as soon as the heat tab rose above the
mountains... awake... make the walk for the morning constitutional... and it's coffee time... and... Randall and
Dannie had stopped on their way back to camp yesterday and picked up apple filled sweet rolls for us all to have
with our coffee... ALRIGHT RANDALL! FAR OUT!
Coffee in hand, we began the process of breaking camp and packing... since going back on the (cool, maybe cold) coast, do not have to pack sweatshirts and jackets... makes a big difference in how full the saddle bags are... roll out of camp by 9am, smaller pile of used camping equipment this year, and a pickup truck going through used camping equipment, makes sense to me... there's enough gear left behind to open a used camping gear store! A short trip to Leggett then right on Highway 1 towards the coast... about an hour of reeeeally curvy highway through the mountains to go the ten miles to the coast, well, maybe not an hour, but, a lot of 1st and 2nd gear turns. We stop... |

... what a great ride, in spite of the cold! Gas up at Chevron in Fort Bragg, ride on... lunch at a small motel with a row of
cabins and a restaurant in Manchester, great clam chowder! Ride on... There is caution signs, "RANGE CATTLE ON HIGHWAY," and
occasional cattle guards to cross, seen such signs before but only ever came across cattle on the highway twice in my life...
three times now... coming around a tight left turn which fed into a tight right turn there were four cows right beside the road,
two laying down, two standing and watching traffic, close! Riding on down the coast, and through the "dragon's tail"... in our
own lane... eventually we head east out of Bodega Bay, gas in Petaluma and Highway 12 to Cordelia and onto I-80; the rear tire
had held out under load so far, up and back, so we speed up to between 62 and 65 mph, probably the fastest we drove on the
entire weekend... how fast do you want to be going if your overloaded rear tire decides to give up? Mike speeds on up to about
70mph and disappears up the freeway towards Placerville. Randall, Dannie, Sharon and I arrive home in West Sacramento around
6:30pm to be greeted by three wagging tails... yup... the dawgs were happy to see us... aww hell... the dawgs are happy to see
anybody.
Going back next year? You betcha! The tickets are $130 per person, but, compared to the price of concert tickets for each of the bands that play, the price of a ticket is bargain for the music alone, plus the camping, plus the BBQ dinner, not a bad deal, not a bad deal at all! And, it's absolutely the best three-day party we go to all year long! KNUCKLEHEADS FOREVER! |
