The Mid-Cal Cycle Spring Open House has been steadily growing every year, so, this year, Bruce and Robert
of Mid-Cal Cycle in West Sacramento (mid-calcycle.com)
teamed up with Skip of the Elkhorn Saloon Country Bar & Grill (elkhorncountrysaloon.com)
on the old river road to Woodland for a "kickin it in the sticks" party!
Folks who wanted to get a little wind in their face before the party arrived at Mid-Cal Cycle in West Sacramento,
swapped stories for a while, and at 10'ish left on a ride - 1st stop just a brief ride down Harbor Boulevard to the
Mecca Club on Sunset Avenue (http://meccaclub.com) for libation, shuffle board, and,
BISCUITS AND GRAVY!
Time to roll, we jumped on I80 west just long enough to get across the causeway and then off the freeway... oops...
freight train... either out run it to the RR crossing or we'll be waiting on it to pass by. Well, with a couple
pick-up trucks ahead it would have been really close out running it... no sense arguing with a train... we waited. Train on down the
tracks we took country roads to Plainfield Station at the intersection of County Road 98 and County Road 29
(facebook.com/pages/Plainfield-Station/154795284533040) for
more libation and lies, I mean stories.
1145'ish was about time to roll again - more roads through the sticks to Elkhorn Saloon. Skip had arrived at 6am to
start cooking the tri-tips and by noon'ish when we arrived, his wife Rose and the staff were all ready for us with
tri-tip sandwiches and your favorite libation, and, The Rotten Dawgs Band was there playing a variety of classic
rock & roll including one of MY personal favorites... SUZIE-Q!
Vendors? Of course, Mid-Cam Cycle had their booth set up - the day was a little on the cool side so sweatshirt
sales was brisk... tank tops - not so much. And Anthony of Screen Printers Ink Printed Apparel and Designs
(screenprintersink.net), whose shop actually shares space within
the Mid-Cal Cycle shop space, was there with a variety of T-shirts, and, representatives of the Tony Diaz Memorial Run
(tonydiazmemorialrun.com) were promoting their 6th annual poker run on the 28th of June
which starts at the Elkhorn Saloon and ends at the Road Trip Bar & Grill in Capay (roadtripbg.com);
that run features BBQ, an auction, a raffle, a live band, and, the proceeds go to scholarships for local youths that
want to continue their education in the area of public service.
It was a busy day at the Elkhorn Saloon; besides the Mid-Cal Cycle group, there were three separate groups of
American Legion riders that had the Elkhorn Saloon as one of the stops on their poker runs. Besides all the
Harleys in the parking lot, there was a variety of other makes, like a huge crotch rocket trumpet (nothing
like my old '65 Bonneville), a beemer dirt bike with all manner of electronic accoutrements attached to the handlebars, a 111 cid Indian,
and "Junior" with his Kawasaki (he will be on a Harley soooooon).
So, you missed the ride and the party - all is not lost - stop in anytime Monday through Friday at Mid-Cal Cycle and
see Bruce or Robert for your motorcycle needs - they work primarily on Harleys and BMWs, and, THEY KNOW THEIR STUFF!
Hungry? Remember, the Elkhorn Saloon is also an eatery, and a damn good one. Skip is a cook extraordinaire, and he
has trained all his staff to cook the way he cooks - check them out - great burgers, fish, spare ribs and prime rib!
