Lane Splitting Guidelines

LANE SPLITTING in a safe and prudent manner is NOT ILLEGAL in the state of California. The term lane splitting, sometimes known as lane sharing, filtering or white-lining, refers to the process of a motorcyclist riding between lanes of stopped or slower moving traffic or moving between lanes to the front of traffic stopped at a traffic light*.

* WHY SPLIT LANES?... regarding "moving between lanes to the front of traffic stopped at a traffic light" - this technique is one of the personal safety maneuvers taught by WaltA, West Sacramento Police Department Motorcycle Officer, retired, as a way to help reduce the risk of being rear-ended at a traffic intersection; likewise, in stopped or slow moving traffic, again, this maneuver is a way to help reduce the risk of being rear-ended;'but still, you must remain alert and WATCH YOUR SIX!... in fact... WATCH EVERYTHING!!!...

  - Approach in a manner such that you will not have to stop
  - If you must stop choose right lane
     - Watch vehicle(s) approaching from rear
     - Flash brake light as vehicle approaches from the rear
     - Vehicle approaching from rear not stopping - turn right
  - If you must stop behind other vehicle(s)
     - Stop far enough back from vehicle to effect escape
     - Stop aimed at shoulder or to lane split
     - Watch vehicle(s) approaching from rear
     - Flash brake light as vehicle approaches from the rear
     - Vehicle approaching from rear not stopping - move along side other vehicles and...
  - If you must stop behind other vehicle(s) and more vehicles pull up behind you
     - Stop far enough back from vehicle to effect escape
     - Stop aimed at shoulder or to lane split
     - Watch vehicle(s) approaching vehicles behind you from rear
        - You stopped far enough over in lane you can see behind vehicles behind you
     - Vehicle approaching from rear not stopping - move along side other vehicles and...
- Example: 25MAR10 crash in Phoenix...
  - Group of bikes stopped side by side behind a SUV behind s sedan
  - Dump truck ran into all from rear and burst into flames
  - 1st report: 8 bikes, 3 dead, 6 injured
  - Later report: 10 bikes, 5 dead
