30OCT20 3:23pm/Friday: our purchase of a house in Oregon was recorded and escrow closed!!!...
|
... typical morning in the Sunnyvale house and then a drive over the hill to Boulder Creek to pick up the previous week's
mail, and, help Richard, Larry & Cole raise the roof on Richard's new gazebo...
|
The following week we began gathering up our "stuff" in the Sunnyvale home where we were staying after being evacuated from Boulder Creek due to forest fires; Wednesday we returned to Boulder Creek where we continued gathering up the remaining "stuff" which was not in the sea container.

U-Haul called Thursday and informed us that the 15' truck and auto transport that we reserved in September was not in Felton, rather, the truck was in Morgan Hill
(30 miles away) and the auto transport was in Freemont (20 miles away) and so we got an extra 120 miles added to the 3 days and 535 miles allowed for usage from Felton
to Brookings making 655 miles allowed... and then... they said we were to pick the truck up at the planned 4:30pm and the auto transport at 10:30 am... I don't think so...
need the truck to get the auto transport... tic tic tic... and then... and then they say get the truck at 4:30pm in east San Jose and the trailer at 6:30pm in Freemont...
and then... and then... and then...
Friday when we got to U-Haul in the east San Jose U-Haul on Alum Rock Road we were told that the person that had the truck we were supposed to get would not be returning
it until Saturday... unacceptable... the dude at the east San Jose U-Haul was golden!!! he found us a 15 ' truck at the San Jose U-Haul on Curtner that we could have at
6:30pm, AND, a trailer we could pick up at the Santa Clara U-Haul on The Alameda when we get there and they are open until 9pm. Soooo, we go to Curtner and sit in the car
waiting... tic tic tic... 6pm... tic tic tic... maybe this truck wont be in until Saturday... tic tic tic... 6:15 the truck arrives and by 6:30 we are on our way to The
Alameda... trailer is waiting for us (pay attention to safty chain connection routing)... truck and auto transport with Solora following finally get to Boulder Creek by 10pm... WHEW!!!

Saturday Richard and I load the overhead and the two twin mattresses and then Richard, Jack, Tyler, Babydoll and I load the '04 FLSTHCI (Harley-Davisdon Softail Herritage Classic)
and the '05 XL883 (Harley-Davidson 55" sthmortster), and everything else loaded, the auto transport is reconnected, the Geo is loaded and secured.
|
... everything loaded and ready to go, final safety chain check... Penny watches... wondering...
|
Sunday morning we are up at 0'dark-thirty and rolling at 6am down hwy 9, gas at Chevron in Felton...
|
... take Mount Hermon Road out of Felton to Scotts Valley to hwy 17 to I-880 to I-580 and across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and continuing to hwy 101 North to the
Irvine Lodge Rest Area (7.9 mi South of Laytonville, rest area exit crosses Long Valley Creek, then bear right on Irvine Lodge Road to the rest area) to pit stop the
dogs and have lunch (salad for Babydoll and a Starkist Lunch To-Go, a mix your own chunk light tuna in water w/mayonnaise, sweet relish, crackers, spoon & napkin - works
for me)...
|
... and then, continue north on hwy 101 to Laytonville for pushwater at Chevron...
|
... and continue continuing north on hwy 101, a few attempts to get photos of the Eel River and cliffs of the Redwood Runs (I can see the river and cliff in the
photos, reckon you had to be there before) in that rough riding truck (I don't think it
had any springs, just rigid frame suspension and the tires rated for 40,000 pounds)... and an attempt at a photo going through the redwoods between Piercy and Garberville...
|
... and continue continuing north on hwy 101, a few photos of the ocean as we come into Eureka...
|
... and continue continuing north on hwy 101...
GOOD BY CALIFORNIA, HELLO OREGON!!!
|
... we arrive at the house in Brookings at 4pm... a casual 55mph max drive for 10 hours without any hair raising events - the U-Haul truck would automatically downshift
when the brakes were applied on a down hill grand, AND, would automatically downshift AGAIN if the brakes were applied before reaching level ground... liked that feature
a lot considering the RUNAWAY TRUCK RAMPS at the bottom on the 6% and 7% downhill roads with max truck speed of 35MPH.
... Penny watches us unload a little bit until sunset...
|
09NOV20/Monday we finish unloading, return the truck and auto transport and take a short drive up the coast and back...
|
11NOV20/Wednesday Penny & Lucy sleep in...
|
13NOV20/Friday we are not quick enough to photo the buck that was passing through, but... got the turkeys...
|
... THA... THA... THA... THAT'A ALL FOLKS...
