1/27/2018 S132 1948 Harley-Davidson FL Panhead NO RESERVE 74 CI 4-Speed Teal 48FL1923
First year of the Panhead, Last year of the springer front fork, Hand shift, Foot clutch, Center stand, Tool box, Ride control
The modern era for Harley-Davidson really began in 1936, with the introduction of the Model EL "Knucklehead," its first OHV big touring machine. The Knucklehead - and Model U flathead - used a much heavier chassis than previous Harleys, with bigger tires, heavier fenders and larger-capacity fuel tanks. The new Harley-Davidson's were rugged, solidly built and had a style the company is still using today on its touring machines: bulbous fuel tanks, deep fenders and a solid vibe. In effect, all other touring Big Twins grew from the Knucklehead, literally not only in terms of shared parts, but also stylistically as a brand identity. Model-year 1948 saw the introduction of a new type of engine, the "Panhead," which used OHV cylinder heads in aluminum atop updated Knucklehead crankcases. The crankcases had been slightly redesigned to eliminate external oil lines, and the new cylinder heads used hydraulic valve lifters, an industry first, to lengthen the service intervals for valve adjustment. The frame, while still rigid, had a new wishbone front downtube, but the styling was otherwise all Knucklehead. The Panhead engine with the rigid frame and "springer" forks is a one-year model, and as such, it is highly coveted by collectors because it is the end of an era for a style of chassis introduced in 1936. The 1948 EL is a stepping-stone between the past and the future for Harley-Davidson, as big changes were coming the next year with telescopic forks (the Hydra-Glide) and full suspension (the Duo-Glide). This 1948 Harley-Davidson Panhead is an older restoration, which has seen some use. As a first-year model with springer forks, it is the most collectible of all Panheads, being the bridge between the Knucklehead and modernity. It features the hand shift/foot clutch of all Harley-Davidson models of that era, and an honest patina - this is a real machine and not built from modern reproduction parts. It’s extremely collectible, very rare and the perfect basis for either a rolling restoration, a full restoration, or simply keeping it "as is" and enjoying it to the fullest.

The Vincent Black Shadow: was there ever a more evocative motorcycle name? It's on everyone's list of must-have machines, and everyone's Top 10 most collectible street bikes; and this one is a stunning restoration. When Philip Vincent made a super sports version of his postwar Rapide model - a superb machine that already held the lofty distinction of being the fastest production motorcycle in the world - he called it the Black Shadow. Nobody knows where Vincent came up with the name, but it didn't matter. It was the perfect name for what was to become a legendary machine. Branding, as it’s known today, is the art of creating imagery that's remembered, and the Black Shadow name is better known than the motorcycle itself. The Black Shadow was a carefully hand-assembled version of the Rapide, plus a few minor parts changes, which added up to a more than 120 MPH top speed and an instant reputation as an unbeatable Hot Rod on the road. With its black engine cases and spooky name, the Black Shadow was also an incredible visual statement, besides being the new "World’s Fastest Motorcycle." Hard to beat that combination, isn't it? This 1951 Vincent Black Shadow is an all-matching-numbers Series C model with Girdraulic forks. It was originally dispatched to Vincent dealers Maiiars, Mitcham in the United Kingdom on May 10, 1951 - note that it's titled as a 1952 model. It retains all the chassis and crankcase parts it left the factory with, including the swingarm, and has been gorgeously restored. The engine received a comprehensive overhaul by renowned Vincent expert Rip Tragle, and is ready to ride and enjoy. A rider's handbook is included to help the new owner orient him or herself with this piece of history. It's truly a stunning machine, and at the top of everyone's list.

1/27/2018 S143 1949 Harley-Davidson FL Panhead NO RESERVE 74 CI 4-Speed Green 49FL2647
First year for the Hydra-Glide telescopic fork, Solo seat, Center stand, Tool box, Restored
Harley-Davidson had plenty of experience building telescopic forks before adding them to its 1949 model range. The company had built them under U.S. military order in 1942, on its Model XA flat-twin - though that was a limited-production machine. Those first hydraulic forks were copies of BMW's R75M forks, and proved themselves reliable from the deserts of Africa to the freezing mud of Russia.
The new Panhead motor appeared in 1948, with aluminum cylinder heads atop the previous model Knucklehead’s crankcases. The crankcases themselves had been redesigned to eliminate external oil lines, and the new cooler-running heads used hydraulic valve lifters - a motorcycle industry first - to lengthen the time between service intervals. While the frame remained rigid, it had a new "wishbone" front downtube for greater strength, and it used the springer-type fork of the Knucklehead.
For 1949, the Panhead was fitted with the Hydra-Glide fork, with added styling changes that gave the bike a masculine gravity: deeper fenders, bigger fuel tanks, a one-piece handlebar and a headlamp cowl. The new styling set the standard for Harley-Davidson touring bikes that persists to this day, and the Panhead was the ultimate touring machine well into the 1960s. Other improvements included a sealed-beam headlamp, a front brake with 34-percent more friction surface area, an optional oil filter, taper roller steering head bearings, and more. Harley-Davidson didn't call this first-year machine a Hydra Glide, but a metal panel on the forks pronounced it, and so it became.
This 1949 Harley-Davidson FL is a first-year Hydra-Glide, and it's fully restored and ready to ride. With Knucklehead prices going through the roof, can Panheads be far behind? Especially significant are years like 1948 and 1949, when major model changes occurred. But regardless of the rising value, this Hydra-Glide is a beautiful, historic motorcycle, fully capable of real-world road use, and a machine to enjoy with pride.

First-year models are always extremely collectible, for example, 1936 Knuckleheads and 1948 Panheads. But last-year models are also collectible, and more importantly, can also be the better buy, especially if one intends to ride the machine. By the end of a production run of a particular model, all the "bugs" have been worked out and all the improvements a factory will ever make to that model will be incorporated. Thus, in many ways, the last-year machine is the best of the breed and the best one to buy for riding.
The FL Panhead was introduced in 1948 with springer forks and a rigid frame - basically the Knucklehead chassis - and it gained telescopic Hydra-Glide forks a year later. Eight years after that, the 1957 Panhead was the last year with a rigid frame before the introduction of the Duo-Glide in 1958. While the Duo-Glide was the real entry of Harley-Davidson into the modern era, it was significantly heavier than the Hydra-Glide it replaced. The 1957 Panhead was lighter - at 588 pounds versus 648 pounds for the Duo-Glide - and the sprung saddle on the vertical seat tube was very comfortable for extended riding stretches, even over rough surfaces. Ask anyone who'd ridden extensively on a rigid Hydra-Glide: they're a modern touring machine with long road legs, a comfortable seating position and a relatively modest weight, before the addition of electric starters, swingarm rear suspension and additional touring gear made all Big Twins into rolling behemoths.
This 1957 Harley-Davidson FL Panhead Hydra-Glide has been fully restored in the white livery of many police departments. With a "police" stencil on the fairing and red spot lights, it’s set up for parades or a bit of fun on the road - watch as drivers pull aside to let you by. It comes complete with a solo seat, the foot-shift option, 1957-specific emblems and Royalite saddlebags.

1/27/2018 S155 1946 Harley-Davidson EL Knucklehead NO RESERVE 61 CI 4-Speed Red 46EL6118
First year post-war Knucklehead, these were virtually unchanged from the pre-war version, Front and rear safety guards, Buddy seat, Hand shift, Foot clutch, Tool box, Period accessories
The Knucklehead was not Harley-Davidson's first OHV motorcycle. It had produced a few 8-valve V-twins 21 years before the 1936 introduction of the Model EL, quite a few production racing Peashooter singles, and even some OHV hillclimbers in the late 1920s. But, early issues with lubrication and fragile valve materials led Harley-Davidson to distrust the OHV motor, at least until it had proven itself durable in the manner expected of a Harley-Davidson, which had built its reputation on solid, robust, easy-to-maintain motorcycles. So the 1936 Model EL OHV V-twin was a radical departure for the motor company, and Harley-Davidson brass were so nervous about the reception of their new machine, they didn't advertise it or catalogue it for its inaugural year.
The EL has a 61 CI (1,000cc) motor with a proper recirculating oiling system, which brought Harley-Davidson technologically up to date with motorcycles around the globe. It has a very strong frame and forks, and a very good 4-speed gearbox too. It was a modern motorcycle, and it soon gained the affectionate name of Knucklehead for the shape of its aluminum valve covers. The Knucklehead was the most technically advanced motorcycle on the American market in the late '30s, and has more than just a beautiful engine; its styling is an American classic, with smooth, balanced lines, which Harley-Davidson uses to this day. With its shapely teardrop gas tanks and flared fenders, the Knucklehead is still an incredibly stylish motorcycle, and demand for them is only increasing, especially for prewar models, which have appreciated dramatically in recent years. Postwar models are following suit.
This 1946 Harley-Davidson EL Knucklehead is a first postwar model, which is virtually unchanged from the prewar design. It features front and rear safety guards, a buddy seat, crash bars and is a complete and solid machine. It also features an amazing patina, possible only after years of faithful service; this motorcycle was clearly ridden and enjoyed, and is waiting for the next owner to do the same.
1/27/2018 S156 1941 Harley-Davidson FL Knucklehead 74 CI 4-Speed Flight Red 41FL3586
First year of the Harley-Davidson FL, 74 ci, OHV motor, 4 speed transmission, Has original tank emblem with red lettering, 1940's era spark plugs, Only 2452 model FL'S manufactured in 1941, Matching crankcase numbers 41-3588, Complete frame up restoration by Mark Jonas of Jonas Builders Inc Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Restored for the American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame in 2003, Sold with running, adjusting instruction. Copy of riders handbook, restorers notes, pictures and more.
While Harley-Davidson considered the short, hard life of overhead-valves set "in the breeze" to be an acceptable tradeoff for top speed on its racers, using them on production machines was another story. Overhead valves were considered too fragile for the hard, dusty use American riders were likely to give them, so Harley-Davidson waited to introduce them on its Big Twins. The 1936 Model EL was a radical departure for the company as its first OHV V-twin offered to the public.
Harley-Davidson was so nervous about the reception to the Model EL that they didn’t advertise or catalogue it for its inaugural year. The EL had a 61 CI (1,000cc) motor with a proper recirculating oiling system and a 4-speed gearbox, which brought Harley-Davidson technologically up to date with motorcycles around the globe. The Knucklehead - as it became known for its aluminum valve covers - gained in popularity over the years as the U.S. emerged from the worst of the Great Depression and riders reluctantly gave up their old reliable flatheads. The Knucklehead was the most technically advanced motorcycle on the American market in the late ‘30s, and it has more than just a beautiful engine; its styling is an American classic, with smooth, balanced lines, which Harley-Davidson uses to this day. With its streamlined look, the Knucklehead is still an incredibly stylish motorcycle, and demand for them is only increasing.
This 1941 Harley-Davidson FL Knucklehead is from the first year of the bigger Big Twin, which featured a 74 CI motor. It’s one of 2,452 FLs built in 1941, and it retains the correct red-lettered tank emblem of that year, as well as matching crankcase numbers. It has a complete frame-up restoration by Wisconsinite Mark Jonas of Jonas Builders, Inc., of Milwaukee. It was restored for the AMA Hall of Fame in 2003, and it was intended as a rider's machine, so it included riding and running instructions, a rider's handbook, restoration notes and photos, and more. It's been fully restored to a factory-correct standard, in glorious red. It’'s a real beauty; who can resist an excellent prewar Knucklehead?

Factory prototype done with prospective link up with Indian Springfield to revitalize Indian MCs, Owned by Phil Irving, Chief designer at the Vincent Factory who brought the bike to Australia in 1950, Engine No.F10AB/1/2492
This ultra-rare prototype is an authentic Vincent factory mockup for a possible production deal with Indian in 1949. When Indian was struggling in 1949 with the troubled release of its new, modular singles and vertical twins, Ralph B. Rogers invited Philip Vincent to visit the Springfield factory to discuss how the modern Vincent V-twin engine design could help Indian. The factories agreed to collaborate on two projects: an Indian Chief chassis with a Vincent engine installed (the "Vindian"), and a more standard Vincent Rapide with Indian parts attached. It was proposed that Vincent would supply engines for 50 Vindians per week and 20 Indian-Vincent Rapide "Super Chiefs" per week. The plan seemed feasible to Vincent, who tooled up to build such a large order, but Indian was too deep chasing faults on its new models and busy re-tooling to resume production of an upgraded 80 CI Chief with telescopic forks to proceed with the deal.
The Vindian project was overseen and built by legendary designer Phil Irving himself, and he’d completed the first Vincent-powered Chief within a month. The second prototype - this motorcycle - was a blend of Indian parts on a standard 1949 Series C Rapide; the nominal Super Chief used a prewar Indian front-fender light, a stock Indian head and tail light, a Delco generator/regulator, Indian switchgear and horn, and Western handlebars and crash bars. This machine was given to Irving as a retirement gift in late 1949, and he took it home to Australia, where he was known to have ridden the machine through 1953; its whereabouts were unknown until 2001. The current owner was able to document the motorcycle’s history with the help of Vincent’s son, who confirmed the special serial numbers. This one-of-one 1949 Indian-Vincent Super Chief was restored as the factory prototype it was originally built as. All components match the specifications added in 1949, and the finished machine has been given the nod of approval of the Vincent Owner’s Club. It's an amazing motorcycle with one heck of a back story, and one very famous owner.

1/27/2018 S192 1941 Harley-Davidson Sport Solo Knucklehead 74 CI Red 41EL1135
Restored by Highway Choppers of Glendale, AZ. They have over 60 years of experience restoring Harley-Davidsons, No expense spared, Only 22 miles after restoration, bike is not fully broken in, Cylinders are coated with oil to prevent rust from forming and valves are closed to prevent dirt from entering the engine, Full documentation and pictures of restoration included, ase No. 41EL1135, Motor No. 41EL1135, Museum ready
Lord, grant me the wisdom to break in this impressive Knucklehead in a wise manner. It's beautiful, red and very correct with a fully rebuilt engine, and it surely looks like terrific fun for the road. Is there a more iconic Harley-Davidson than the Knucklehead? The EL was introduced in 1936 with a 61 CI (1,000cc) motor, a 4-speed gearbox and a proper recirculating oiling system, which meant Harley-Davidson was on par technologically with the best motorcycles around the world. With terrific styling, the Knucklehead was the most technically advanced American motorcycle of the late '30s, making it an all-time classic. With perfectly balanced lines and attractive teardrop gas tanks, the Knucklehead is still a stylish motorcycle with contemporary looks, and demand is increasing rapidly for prewar models. This 1941 Harley-Davidson EL Sport Solo was totally restored by Highway Choppers in Glendale, Arizona, which has more than 60 years of experience restoring Harley-Davidsons. This is a no-expense-spared restoration, and the Knucklehead is in better-than-new condition. The engine has matching case numbers, and all replacement parts and work completed are documented with invoices from Highway Choppers, which are included in the sale, along with photos documenting the restoration process. The cylinders have been coated in oil to prevent rust during storage, and the valves are closed to prevent dirt and moisture entering the engine. The owner cared enough about this machine to issue the following instructions: "I've owned this bike since 1997, but can't kickstart it anymore, so it needs a new home. The bike is not fully broken in, with only 22 miles recorded, so please run it slowly for the next 100 miles. When you do ride it, just add oil and fuel and enjoy, you will not find a more original Knucklehead. It's museum ready."

1/27/2018 S194 1947 Harley-Davidson EL Knucklehead Bobber 61 CI 4-Speed Black/Grey 47EL8751
1947 EL Bobber built to ride, 4 speed transmission, Original speedometer, gas tanks and headlight, 400-18 inch tires, 12 volt electric, belt primary, flanders bars, Bike starts, shifts, runs and stops as it should, 3,752 miles on speedometer since mechanical rebuild, Engine No. EL8751
The last year for the Harley-Davidson EL Knucklehead was in 1947, which was superseded the following year by the Panhead, with aluminum cylinder heads and a few other changes. The first Panhead had the same chassis as the Knucklehead with an improved engine, although plenty of riders think the Knucklehead is one of the finest motors ever built by Harley-Davidson. It certainly is smooth and relatively unstressed, being only 61 CI on the EL Model. So the "Knuck," being a used bike superseded by a newer model, was a readily available and relatively inexpensive machine by the late 1940s and early ‘50s, which made them suitable for customizing. The truth is, of course, that they’d been customized since new in the style of Class C racers, which ditched their front fenders, shortened their rears and took to the dirt tracks across the U.S. The Class C racer was the model for what became known as the "Bob-Job," a term simplified today into "Bobber."
The Bob-Job was a classic style, and the second wave of American custom motorcycles, after the Cut-Down of the late 1920s and '30s. The Cut-Down was the first recognizable custom style in the world, and although it was rare, it started a trend. The Bob-Job was a lot less rare, in fact it became the most popular style of customization from the 1930s to the present day; you can buy a new Triumph Bobber based on the look of Class C racers of the mid-1930s.
This 1947 EL Knucklehead Bob-Job was built to ride. It has its original speedometer, gas tanks and headlamp, with a 12-volt electrical system, a belt-drive primary and 18-inch wheels on both the front and rear. This bike starts, shifts, runs and stops as it should, and it has 3,752 miles on it since it was fully mechanically rebuilt—meaning it’s been ridden and sorted. It looks like a treat too.

1/27/2018 S198 1955 Harley-Davidson FLH 74 CI 4-Speed Orange 55FLH5265
74 CI v-twin, 4-speed transmission, First year production Model FLH, Believed to be 25,000 miles, Commemorative anniversary edition, Signified by V-Emblem Badge on front fender, Only 63 1955 FLH models were produced, Previous owner documentation, Engine # 55FLH5265
This might well be the quintessential Panhead, a very special, low-mileage anniversary-edition FLH. By 1955, the Harley-Davidson FL Panhead was firmly established as the ultimate touring motorcycle: big, powerful and comfortable for the long haul with good protection from rain and road grit from its deep fenders, and plenty of chrome, just like its four-wheeled cousins in 1950s America. The FLH was the high-compression version of the FL, with a compression ratio of 8:1, giving 60 HP and a 105 MPH top speed. The new model had a strengthened bottom end via stronger crankcases and bigger bearings, and the oil pump was enlarged for greater flow. The old "tombstone" tail light was replaced by the new Big Twin oval light, and the rear wheel received roller bearings to replace the double-row ball bearings. The 1955 Harley-Davidson models were the first Commemorative Anniversary Edition, celebrating 50 years of production, which can be a little confusing as Harley-Davidson celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003. The company decided to include the prototyping years of 1903 and 1904 into its official story, while in the 1950s they included the actual founding of the business and commencement of production. Besides the big "V" badge on the front fender for the 50th anniversary, the 1955 FL had three diagonal stripes added to each side of the fork top panel, and it retained the Hydra Glide insignia on the forks. The rear end remained rigid, which meant the weight of the bike was still under 600 pounds, even if barely. The new tank emblem also included a large "V" behind the Harley-Davidson script, and the FL and FLH were available with either hand or foot shift. This 1955 Harley-Davidson FLH 50th Anniversary Edition is a very rare, low-mileage machine in great condition. It’s believed this beauty has only rolled 25,000 miles, and the sale includes documentation from the previous owner. In 1955, only 63 FLH models were produced, making this one of the rarest street Harley-Davidson’s of all time.

The prettiest Desert Sled of all, the 1965 Triumph T120C featured the last year of Triumph's "harmonica" tank badge and one of the prettiest paint schemes ever from the factory: metallic blue and silver with gold pinstriping. Triumph introduced its unit-construction 650cc engine in 1963, and with yearly updates evolving the models rapidly, made updates and horsepower in a continuous effort to keep its T120 Bonneville flagship at the top of the market. The T120 Bonneville, with its twin Amal Monobloc carburetors, was named for the original twin-carb cylinder head's debut on Johnny Allen's land-speed racer, and the Bonnie remained the fastest bike in production for many years. With 47 HP and the good luck blessing all Triumphs designed by Edward Turner, it was a very popular machine in the U.S., Triumph's No. 1 export market. What Americans wanted was a competent all-around machine that could be ridden to an enduro, competed and ridden home again; the T120C was developed for such a customer, with high-level exhausts, minimal road equipment and the highest power ratings in their capacity range. While many riders preferred the single-carb TR6 Trophy models off-road, plenty of riders wanted every horse they could buy and opted for the twin-carb C version of the Bonneville. This 1965 Triumph T120C Bonneville is completely and accurately restored, and it's a beautiful example of this rare model. It features the energy transfer (ET) battery-less ignition favored by competition riders, along with a speedometer and lights original to the on/off-road origin of the model. The product of a nut-and-bolt restoration with correct switchgear, air cleaners and fasteners, it's unlikely you'll find a better restoration of a Bonneville Desert Sled.
